  • Happy Birthday, Hediyeh Tehrani

I first encountered Iranian actress Hediyeh Tehrani&#;s work when I covered the Tribeca Film Festival in (it was my first real &#;gig&#;). was assigned to review Fireworks Wednesday. This was my introduction to Iranian film. Fireworks Wednesday was intriguing enough for me to institute a crash course. I saw as much as I could get my hands on. Fireworks Wednesday was a good &#;way in&#; too: It was directed by Asghar Farhadi, who would go on to win the Oscar for A Separation &#; and finally, recently, About Elly (which I consider equal to A Separation) was rescued from obscurity for a long-delayed U.S. release. Fireworks Wednesday was also my introduction to Tehrani &#; as well as to Taraneh Alidoosti &#; (she was also the &#;Elly&#; in About Elly, as well as the wife in The Salesman). But Tehrani was the one who intrigued me first, who pulled me in, who made me sit up and pay close attention. &#;Okay. Focus. This actress is GOOD.

Hediyeh Tehrani started her acting career with Masud Kimiai's "The Sultan ()", which made her a recognizable star instantly. Previously, she had been offered a few roles which she passed on. In , Hedieh won a Hafiz Award (a prestigious industry award in Iran) for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of 'Maryam Koohsari' in Soltan. Since then, Hedieh has won numerous awards for her numerous roles - both nationally and internationally- perhaps making her one of the most recognizable artists in Iran. Hedieh is known for her portrayal of strong, willful and often stubborn women. Besides her acting career, Hedieh has been adamant about promoting her country- Iran- through her photography. Her pictorial essays on some of the most remote areas of Iran has garnered her much recognition and she fryst vatten an active member of "Khooshe Saar-e Boomi" a grassroot organization dedicated to preserving native and indigenous cultural habitats and customs. Career

    [edit]

Mohammad Reza Sharifinia and Azita Hajian were the first ones to propose her a role for The Fateful Day.
