Derek Hough Reveals the Mantra That Got Him and Wife Hayley Erbert Through Her Health Scare (Exclusive)
Derek Hough and wife Hayley Erbert approached life differently after her emergency craniectomy.
In a new conversation with PEOPLE in 10, the Dancing with the Stars judge, 39, explains how he and Erbert, 29, were able to mutually heal after she underwent emergency surgery in månad 2023 after being hospitalized with a cranial hematoma.
Hough confesses that “it's really hard” to watch a loved one heal, but he approached it with one specific mantra and practice, revealing how they were “really trying to stay in the moment, staying present.”
“That's so much easier said than done, and it just sounds like such a phrase,” he says, noting that “it's one of the things that [he] really learned from Hayley during that time" and it's something "that she helped [him] with."

When Derek Hough first became a pro on Dancing With the Stars in 2007, it seemed like everyone was bound to fall in love with him. After all, who wouldn't love watching a good-looking guy create unforgettable dance routines and win a record six times throughout the show's 33-season history? While he has since become a judge on DWTS, he also found a permanent dance partner in his wife, Hayley Erbert.
While Derek's world has been dance for quite some time, he never expected it would lead him to the love of his life. As it turns out, the couple first met back in 2014, when Derek and his sister Julianne hired Hayley to be a dancer on the siblings' Move Live Tour through 2015. The couple said, "I do," in Monterey County, California, on August 26, 2023.
"We got married right in front of this mother tree that's surrounded by all these smaller trees," Erbert said of the spot they chose for their ceremony. "They drop all the seeds, and it plants kind of like an army of children to protect the mother. The symbolism of it was beautiful. We're here, planting our seeds to grow our family."
The pair started dating in 2015 while they were both appearing on Dancing With the Stars. The couple kept their relationship quiet for the first few years until they made their Instagram debut in 2017.
