On Thursday 28th January , Trinidad and Tobago lost one of its biggest musical icons. Singing Sandra or Sandra DesVignes-Millington as she was also known as when not on the stage was 63 years old.
Born in East Dry River in and raised in Morvant without her father, Sandra and her mother many times struggled to make ends meet. Her grandmother was known to be an exceptional singer and from a young age it was clear that the talent had been passed on to little Sandra.
Sandra often opted to skip school, not because of rebellion but because she felt the need to work due to her familys financial situation. So work she did. Along with acting, singing and performing in village productions and attending to her faith (Sandra was a believer in Orisha). By Sandra, who hadnt finished school was noticed by the calypsonian Dr. Zhivago and the following year was recruited to the Mighty Sparrows youth brigade. Singing Sandra, one the icons of calypso, has passed. She was Born in East Dry River, Trinidad & Tobago in , Sandra’s family on her father’s side, the John family, hailed from Gouyave, Grenada. Sandra performed frequently at the annual Fisherman’s Birthday in Gouyave. Sandra Des Vignes-Millington was the second woman to capture the National Calypso Monarch of Trinidad & Tobago. She took the title on two occasions. She was the 3rd runner-up in EVERYBODY’S World Calypso Monarch competition held in New York and seen on Pay-Per-View in several states.
