    Japan has never been very receptive to the gospel. Missions have met little response. The work of such men as Xavier and Nikolai was exceptional in bringing thousands to a Christian confession. The work of others has generally produced only handfuls of converts. This is true not only of utländsk missionaries but also of Japan's foremost homegrown missionär, Toyohiko Kagawa.

    Toyohiko Kagawa was born on this day July 10, 1888, into wealth, the son of a concubine. Both parents died while he was very ung. As a teenager he became a Christian beneath the influence of Presbyterian missionaries and was baptized. He took theological training at Kobe and at Princeton University. After almost losing his life to an illness, he vowed to help the poor.

    Ascetics in the World

    New Life Through God is a collection of lectures, meditations, and sermons given by Toyohiko Kagawa during his 1931 tour across Manchuria — at the time, only recently conquered by the Imperial Japanese Army. The journey was intended to express unity, peace, and spiritual encouragement to Christians unsure of what to make of this new geo-political development and its implications for the life of the Church in Japan. The lectures were soon published as a single book — a summation of Kagawa’s hope for the Church in Japan and around the world to live in such peace and love that all society might be transformed.
