    • Sonja Danowski was born in Iserlohn, Germany. She studied design in Nuremberg and since then has been working in Berlin as an illustrator. Her work focuses especially on picture books, using images to preserve human memories. Between 2007 and 2019, Danowski received nearly forty domestic and international awards from various countries, including Germany, the United States, Russia, China, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, and Italy, and has participated in more than thirty international exhibitions in Countries: China, UAE, Bulgaria, Italy, Turkey, Portugal, etc. were present.

  • Interview with Sonja Danowski, illustrator of Grandma Lives In a Perfume Village and author/illustrator of Smon, Smon, Little Night Cat, and In the Garden with Flori

    Sonja Danowski was born in Iserlohn, Germany. After finishing her studies in Nürnberg, she went to Berlin to work as an illustrator. Her focus is mainly on picture books and on pictures that preserve human memories. Her colored drawings have won several international awards. Her most recent work is In the Garden with Flori, published as Im Garten mit Flori in Europe. Danowski discusses her artistic studies, her challenges with illustrating nature, and the influences that picture books can have on young readers.

    What memories do you have of your own childhood? Are there things that have remained in your head and that your pencils and paintbrushes revive in your current work?

    Sonja Danowski was born in Iserlohn, in 2008 she completed a design degree with distinction. For her sista year planerat arbete , a limited-edition collection of watercolor drawings, she received the Art Directors Club Germany Junior Award. While she was still studying she submitted works to various competitions, which were then published in journals such as »3×3 Magazine« for contemporary illustration, as well as at exhibitions like the »Ilustrarte Portugal« and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Thus a Spanish publisher took meddelande of the artist.

    In 2012 simultaneously in seven different languages »El Princpio« (Eng. »The Beginning«) was published, in which the Galician author Paula Carballeira tells the story of a family that loses its home in the war and embraces the challenges of a disrupted life. The story was translated into German in 2014. The timeless drawings stress the relevance of this experience in today’s world. In
