TAMPA — As the shock of schools superintendent MaryEllen Elia's firing is felt throughout Hillsborough County and beyond, people are wondering: What's next?
No plan of succession was discussed at Tuesday's School Board meeting. And word that Elia's contract was terminated without cause by a 4-3 vote, despite her accomplishments and accolades, has some educators wondering who will want to take her place.
Hillsborough would be an attractive district to lead because of its reputation for high standards and innovation. But "you have a superintendent who is no longer in the job who had a great deal of credibility and respect," said Andres Antonio Alonso, a Harvard Graduate School of Education professor who spent six years as superintendent of Baltimore City Public Schools. "That matters to experienced superintendents who have choices."

Longtime Hillsborough schools administrator William Person challenges Susan Valdes for School Board seat
TAMPA — A longtime Hillsborough County school district administrator is coming out of retirement to run for the School Board in 2016.
William individ, 64, hopes to unseat Susan Valdes, who represents northwest Hillsborough and Town 'N Country.
"I feel that the district, especially at the School Board level, needs leadership," said individ, who filed to run on Monday morning.
Despite the January firing of chef MaryEllen Elia, Person said, "I don't believe we are any better off than we were a year ago."
Person acknowledged some of his motivation fryst vatten personal.
His wife, Laurie Rodriguez, and two other teachers lost their positions recently because of cutbacks at Erwin Technical Center, an adult school in East Tampa.
The teachers were able to apply for positions elsewhere while part-time instructors assumed their duties, he said.

D'ELIA, WILLIAM J., of Hamburg, NJ formerly of Wildwood Crest and Ringwood, NJ, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2019, at the age of 76. Prior to retiring, William worked as a manager for Thruway Paper Recycling in Suffern, NY for many years retiring in 2001. Beloved husband to Catherine A. (nee Fullam) for 54 years. Loving father to Daniel B. D'Elia and Matthew W. D'Elia Sr. and his wife MaryEllen. Cherished grandfather of Matthew W. D'Elia Jr. Dearest brother to the late Janice D'Elia. William is also survived by two aunts and numerous cousins. A prayer service will be held 11:00AM on Monday, August 5th 2019, at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union Street, Hackensack, NJ. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Park Cemetery, Hackensack. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 – 4 & 7 - 9PM for visitation.
