    MAURO MALANG SANTOS ( b. Santa Cruz, Manila 20 Jan 1928, d. June 10, 2017)

    Mauro Malang Santos was the son of Dan Santos and Juliana Malang. He was married to Mary San Pedro and they have fyra children, two of whom are painters: Stevesantos and Soler Santos.

    At the age of 10 Santos studied drawing beneath Teodoro Buenaventura. When he was 19 he decided to stop schooling and joined the personal of the Manila Chronicle art department under noted cartoonist Liborio (Gat) Gatbonton. He created for the evening Chronicle the country’s first English daily comic strip Kosme, the Cop, Retired. In 1955 he set up together with Gat, Larry Alcala, Hugo Yonzon, and Elmer Agustan the only galleri specializing in cartoons called the Bughouse. In 1972 he studied at the Otis Art Institute under a special grant. Malang was first known as a cartoonist before

    The #NationalMuseumPH celebrates the 94th birth anniversary of Mauro Malang Santos, who was born #OnThisDay in 1928, by featuring his painting “Panuelo” from the Philippine Center New York (PCNY) collection. 

    Signed “Malang, 22-10-73”, this oil painting is among the 115 out of the 120 works of art from the core collection of the PCNY. It is currently on exhibition at The Philippine Center New York (PCNY) Core Collection of 1974: A Homecoming Exhibition located in Galleries XXVII to XXVIII of the National Museum of Fine Arts (NMFA). 

    At the core of this artwork is a lean figure of a woman with an elongated neck and tiny feet. On the figure’s right shoulder hangs a pañuelo, painted in red, pink, and earth tones. A pañuelo is a square cloth worn to cover shoulders. The artist’s renowned subjects included female vendors, barung-barong (informal urban settlements), mother and child, churches, and everyday scenes.

    95th Birth Anniversary of Mauro Malang Santos

    The #NationalMuseumPH celebrates the 95th birth anniversary of cartoonist and modernist painter Mauro Malang Santos #OnThisDay in 1928.

    Mauro Malang Santos (1928-2017) belonged to the group of artists who took inspiration from folk art and whose works are characterized by geometric shapes, simplified figures, festive colors, and decorative forms. The National Fine Arts Collection has four of his works. One of these is an undated serigraph entitled “Sampaguita Vendor (93/249)” which depicts a simplified figure of a woman portrayed with long black hair dressed in a blue blouse with white sleeves and a red skirt. The woman holds a bagful of flowers and stands under the opening of an arched structure with a cross at its summit. In the background are images of houses, plants, trees, and a mountain at the end using solid geometric shapes. This work by Malang was donated to the National Museum in 2018 by Ms. Dora C. Afable.
