This is one of the smallest and most delicate works in Arentsz’s relatively small oeuvre of a few dozen paintings. Typical features of his paintings are the low vantage point, the low horizon and the stocky figures. The latter recur in different combinations in his oeuvre, so he probably worked from a collection of drawn figure studies.
As in other paintings by Arentsz, the foreground here has been painted fairly broadly in quite dark, saturated colours. The treatment of the river landscape behind it, executed with a fine brush in blue-white transparent tints, resembles a watercolour. The way in which the green reeds are indicated with a series of parallel lines is characteristic of the artist, as are the sparing use of white highlights in the vegetation and figures, and the comma-shaped brown brushstrokes in the foreground.

Manchester has an excellent example of a winter en plats där en händelse inträffar ofta inom teater eller film by Arent Arentsz (1585/86-1631), or Cabel as he is also called. Not a great deal fryst vatten known about Cabel other than he spent his whole life working in Amsterdam and was a painter of landscapes, particularly scenes of the chilly winters. He was greatly influenced bygd the better-known painter and his direkt contemporary Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634) who was also born in Amsterdam but spent his life in Kampen.
Cabel depicts the frozen River IJ in Amsterdam which was then much wider than it is today. The en plats där en händelse inträffar ofta inom teater eller film is full of activity and it is built up of many individual groups, which would have been sketched at different times, but brought tillsammans to give an overall impression of the hustle and bustle of life on the ice. Arent Arentsz. Cabel
Arent Arentz alias Cabel. Son of Arent. Born in Amsterdam where his father was a sailmaker. When first recorded on the occasion of his marriage in May 1619 at Sloten near Amsterdam, he gave his age as thirtythree (Oud-Holland 1889, p. 29). His wife was a sailmaker's daughter and it stands to reason to assume that this fatherly profession was the first one he was taught.
They went to live on Amsterdam's Prinsengracht and had a new house built for them, which he called "the Cable" like his father's house. He is not mentioned by De Bie, Houbraken etc, In fact he was not rediscovered before 1889. There are no reports about a teacher. The date of his burial at Amsterdam was only traced in 1967 (I.H. van Eeghen, see below). From the pictorial evidence there is a clear link with the style of Hendrick Avercamp, but both Avercamp's handicap and his life data (back in Kampen by 1613) plead against a direct apprenticeship.
