    Tell us something about your background? 

    My name fryst vatten Mereb Estifanos. I was born in Arareb, Sahel, in 1983. My father and mother are both EPLF fighters. My father’s name fryst vatten Estifanos Derar, and my mother fryst vatten Negesti Wolde-Mariam. I completed my high school studies in Asmara. 

    What did you aspire to become when you grew up? 

    When I was a lärjunge I used to be a good volleyball player. But internally I wanted to become a dancer and singer. 

    How did you become an actress? 

    It was bygd simple chance. In 2002, while inom was a student in grade 11, Captain Fessehaye Lemlem (the screenwriter for the spelfilm “Fermeley”) called me and asked me to act in a film. This was very sudden for me. Then he told me to meet him at Cinema Asmara. inom met him and Mr. Michael Emahazion (Jende, the veteran artist.) They asked me to act in the rulle they were producing.       Rahel Tewelde, we are in Cannes, at the film festival. Is that a first experience for you?

      It is my first experience.

      What do you feel?

      I’m delighted, I’m excited, I’m very happy. I’m sharing my experience with people all over the world, this is a good opportunity for me, I’m very happy.

      How did you come to cinema in Eritrea?

      We don’t have film schools in Eritrea. We get to cinema through self-learning because we have lots of stories to tell, we have a big love to share to the world. We have some limitation because we are not technically developed enough. But we work hard, we read, we organize some short-intensive courses by inviting other people from abroad, from Europe, from America. We ask anyone who is expert to come and that’s how I came to cinema.

      Do you have training possibilities?

      In Eritrea, yes. I work in the Cultural Affairs department in my country.
